After competing in the Pan American Karate Federation games in Lima, Peru, Kevin brought home the gold medal!
After asking Kevin how he managed to accomplish such an amazing feat, he said, “I think my success came from a lot of hard work, an open mind, and adapting to everything.”
Although Kevin admits he was very nervous, he managed to put it behind him and fight like nothing else mattered.
“I was really nervous, especially during the days leading up to the fight. But once you get on the mat, you get in the zone and it goes away,” said Kevin.
Kevin was the only one from his karate team to make it to the Pan American Karate Federation games. He felt incredibly honored to travel across the world with his parents and coach representing his country as he fought in the competition. Rancho Pico is very proud to call you one of our Mustangs!
Congratulations Kevin!
Kevin Stevens proudly sports his gold medal.

At the conclusion of the last school year a Rancho Pico karate master won gold in the 12-13 elite fighting, or kumite, division as well as a bronze medal in the elite kata division in the US Karate Nationals held in Reno, Nevada. Yes, we are talking about 8th-grader Kevin Stevens.
“It felt great to win gold! I have been training for a long time, so a lot of hard work has paid off,” said Kevin.
Now he moves towards an even bigger accomplishment. His win earned him a spot on the US Junior National Karate team, and he will be representing the United States at the Pan American Karate Federation games. He will fly with his teammates to Lima, Peru where they will represent the United States and compete for the gold.
“I am very nervous to compete because I will be facing the best people from the other countries. But I think I will do well,” stated Kevin.
